It's been about a year from when this forum was launched. Thank you, Remi & Ryan! The original goal was to support folks who wanted to design games that we would run & play at Dreamation 2010. We successfully did that with Prehistoric Ties and the Pinkwater game getting good playtest at Dreamation, a bunch of freeform getting play, and a new larp/jeep hybrid Tam Lin being produced.

I was wondering what direction we would go with the forum once we got to Dreamation. It's been pretty quiet here, and we had some rocky moments last year. We'd completed the initial project this forum was formed for. Now what?

Two things: at Dreamation, I heard good feedback from folks who had posted about their games here. They'd gotten better feedback than at other places, and liked the community. Also, I've got a scheme I'm working on, to help support free form games being run by me and other folks. Maybe the forum could remain, but change purpose?

That would mean instead of it being focused specifically in design, this would be a place people could talk about games they want to run, and coordinate players, space etc. And it would be a space where players could talk about their experiences in the games. This could also be a place where we could easily communicate with friends from across the sea, to get their help and also let them know what intriguing or infuriating things we're doing with their games, tools, etc.

If anyone finds this of interest I could use help in several ways: organizing games, creating another website that will be used to publicize games being held, writing descriptions of games we can post to create a repertoire that people can browse through and find to present themselves, and maybe even technical help with re-tooling the forum. My goal is to work on the sites this spring and summer, to be fully launched by the fall.

I'm game for anything. I don't know how much help I can provide on the website, if you have behind the scenes code changes I can volunteer for that. I can muck around with presentation stuff, but it's not a strong skill of mine.

Thanks, Dave. That would be much appreciated. Let's huddle. :)

I was initially really excited about this forum and then quickly cooled when it seemed like folks hoped to focus discussion on a certain set of practices that were not necessarily the things that were most exciting to me. I totally understand if folks are still mostly interested in "American Jeep" and I don't feel entitled to being able to effectively discuss other kinds of structured freeform here or elsewhere, but I guess I just think it's a shame if there are lots of interesting semi-related practices being developed and formalized all over the place -- including stuff like what Vincent's doing with fictional positioning in Apocalypse World, which is structured freeform (mixed in with some cool dice mechanics) if I ever saw it -- and yet we're still segmenting these discussions into different bodies of knowledge. I definitely agree that some segmentation is necessary to make sense of it all, but I really wish I could be in effective communication with you folks about what each of us is up to, design and play wise, but felt like that hasn't really happened here yet. Maybe this isn't the place. But I'd love to make it happen somewhere. Go Play NW 2010?

Jon for what it's worth I don't consider Prehistoric Ties to be Jeep. American or otherwise. Then again categorization doesn't tend to interest me.

Totally, Dave, and I think that's awesome. And since the entire forum's been so quiet lately, it's hard to blame the limited support you're getting on categorization. I guess I'm just wondering if opening things up and building connections with different approaches to freeform design could be part of the revitalizing process.

Well, I was glad to get a chance to even find this forum.

I'm afraid the only ideas I've really got to discuss are cribbed from psych papers. I rather like them, but I have no idea if they'll work with jeepform or anything similar. I hope so.

:) I hope so too. Glad you found us, Arpie!

I'm thinking of taking the forum offline for some time, to give a chance to make changes freely. Ryan & Remi, I'll be in touch about that.

One of the merits of this forums is the absolutely fabulous term, Structured Freedom, which in so many ways is better than the somewhat strange Jeepform. It has become a oft used term for me in describing Jeepform to both Americans, Scandinavians and the other Europeans. Also as this forum is far less crowded than the other 'indie rpg' forums, the slower speed of threads and comments makes it possible to in some degree follow what is going on. I'm completely lost at the pace of storygames and the forge.

Structured freeform will for the foreseeable future remain a niche within gaming, and as such those attracted to it, will find a focused forum for the discussion here. I really don't see a high volume of post here, and that is a good thing.

In the future I would like to see more creative collaboration, both of the funny kind and the more serious. I have several ideas, Emily. Could this forum also be of interest to the american larpers?

Oh, and can we ditch the categories?

Wonderful, Frederik. Thank you. I'm open to ideas. And I 100% agree about the name.

Here are my thoughts for new categories:

    projects
    events
    design
    play
    thoughts
    site

    what else?

Do the categories even help? Unless the volume really picks up, they seem irrelevant.

Changing the categories would help support a different function for this site.

To focus on making connections with other players, and planning events. With design and theory as an aspect of the site, but not the only or primary reasons for it.

I agree with Jason. Kill the categories. What about tags (as a replacement for categories)?

Also, can I suggest we remove the stickies? To me, stickies adds to the staleness of forums. The regulars don't read them anymore, the newcomers just wan't cool content, not read manuals.

If there is a need for practical info's, rules etc. that could be but in a tab or in the sidebar.

Hm. I'd like to have a website to take the sticky information. Changing Vanilla from category to tabs is beyond my technical knowledge.

That's why I'm here, and not elsewhere.
