So, due to kind fate and amazing friends, it looks like I'll be heading to northern Europe next month to attend Fastaval in Denmark, and Knutepunkt in Norway. From what I understand, Fastaval is a large convention (@600 people) that has become a center for new games and play ideas. They reached out to folks on Story Games to contribute games to be run. Also, Fredrik Jensen who gave us Montsegur is one of the organizers. Knutepunkt is a theory oriented con, with many panels for discussion of innovation and analysis of play. As part of the con project, they publish a series of essay books, including Playground Worlds and Beyond Role and Play which have been discussed here.

I am very excited to go, and think this is a great opportunity for some cross-back-pollination. Tobias asked me already if I would help him run Ryan's Damned Anonymous, and I'll be running Under my Skin. I've got a copy of A Flower for Mara, and I'll print off The Exit Interview, but if there's anything you'd like me to get into hot little Nordic hands, post it here by April 4th or so, and I'll bring it with me.

This is also a time when I can ask any questions folks may have, so if you have some, lay them on me. :)

That's superb. You're going using their grant, right?

I was due to go myself, also on a grant, but can't now make it.

We will miss you at Forge Midwest.

Note to self...check global convention schedules when planning for next year. :)

Totally selfish question: when will "Playground Worlds" be available in PDF? There's stuff I want to read in it!

Sorry I won't see you, Graham. Yes, it is on their grant. I'm very grateful.

Tim! I'll miss you all too. But Ep and I will try to be back next year. His family lives right outside Madison. It's a natural. :)

Seth: I will do some research. I think the way the do things is that once the book has paid for it's printing, or sold out of the first run, then they put it out on pdf.

Yay!! I'll see you there, Emily! Will you be there for the "Week in Norway?" If so, sign up now for the larps at http://www.larpconference.org/

(Regarding the book -- in practice, there isn't much of a "way they do things." Each year there are different people handling it, in a different country, and organization can be sketchy. I'll see about pushing the editors to get it online when I see them.)

Seth, I have five print copies of Playground Worlds that I've been meaning to distribute. Email me your address and I'll mail you one (jaywalt at gmail).

Thanks for the offer, Jonathan, but someone else has already made a similar generous offer. So, I should soon be in possession of my very own copy. But, if I come across someone who would benefit, I'll let you know.

Wow. So I'm back home again, and have so much to write about I don't know where to start. I'll be posting here about games like Imperiet, Fat Man Down and Bill White's freeform version of Ganakagok. And posting pictures and anecdotes on my blog fairgame-rpgs.com.

Fastaval and Knutepunkt are must go's, in my opinion, for anyone interested in European gaming. From amazing freeform games, to accomplished players and awe inspiring projects like interactive online rp for Joss Whedon's Dollhouse series, to daring WWII re-enactments in Byelorussia.

I'm not quite back yet -- I'm taking a few days after Knutepunkt to visit Moscow. However, Emily has among other things failed to mention her own "Under My Skin," which won great praise at Fastavaal and was also enjoyed by a set of players who played it at Knutepunkt (myself included).

I also did jeepform games The Lady and Otto, Drunk, and The Mothers - plus other larps and games which may or may not fall under the "structured freeform" category (I still need to process), along with having many interesting discussions, and dancing and drinking as well.

Dancing and drinking*! Yes, those were some of the best parts too. :)

And, thank you, John. It was great to see you there. Have a wonderful time in Moscow!

*Mostly water for me, but oh, the Danes do love their beer. And all the Nords do the spirits justice.
