I really like the idea of this forum and I really like the discussions I have seen so far. The focus on Jeep is a bit absurd, but understandable. And I really think it will evolve quite a bit.

Anyway. I am somewhat unsure on what kind of discussions are wanted in this forum and would appreciate some clarifications! Emily wrote on fair-game that:

"The goal is to get a whole new crop of American (in the continental sense) structured freeform out there to play by Dreamation 2010. We'll put our own stamp on it, we already have, but it's great to have community to help put the pieces together."

Something similar, although not exactly the same is stated in the rules or what-have-you in one of the stickies. So my question is: Is the idea that mainly people who are to be directly involved with Dreamation or something else in some similar American location should create these game-specific threads and that the rest of us should swarm around and write other type of witty and informative content?

And, really, it is just a question. It would make sense if it was like that, but I would like to hear your intentions. (you=1) moderators and 2) others)

Jeep is a focus because they've posted their games and their ideas of play in public, easy-to-access places. They've made an effort at outreach to people here. I can't talk about most European freeform because I can't play it without going to Europe and playing with one of their scenario writers. It's essentially an informational dead zone to me. Avoiding this dead zone of information is the goal of this forum. It's useless to create new games, play them, learn from them, discuss them, and use those as a springboard to forward the conversation if all that conversation does not produce something other people can play.

That is the baseline. Always ask yourself, is what you're doing helping people create something that other people can play? Not in an abstract sense of 'adding to the base of knowledge' but in a concrete sense of 'how will this lead to new ways to play, or explaining play?'

Dreamation 2010 is the drop-deadline for this forum. After that it will probably go away. If you create something here, we will try to honor that and play it (if not at Dreamation than elsewhere). If you have design work you'd like to complete in that time period, you're welcome to join, even if you won't be at Dreamation. If you do not want to design, but wish to playtest and talk to designers, and help them complete their work, that would be fantastic. If you just want to buzz and comment and woolgather, then this is probably not the place for you.

    Does that answer your question?

And for a perfect example of how this forum should work, The incorporation of audience lead to [American Upgrade] lead to Exit Interview and Flashback Alley and hopefully several more shortform Jeep. Ideally I'd like to see most of the participants here take a stab at writing a shortform scenario, even if it's an attempt to comment on or 'break' Jeep or not a Jeep at all.

I fully agree on and understand what you say about Jeep. I wasn't arguing anything.

"That is the baseline. Always ask yourself, is what you're doing helping people create something that other people can play? Not in an abstract sense of 'adding to the base of knowledge' but in a concrete sense of 'how will this lead to new ways to play, or explaining play?'"

    Ok, cool.

    "Does that answer your question?"

Yes. I basically take it as a 'Yes' to my question;-) Thanks.

(UPDATE: With that I mean 'Yes' to the questionI really tried to frame:'Can I write about games I write?)

Yes, absolutely write about the games you write. But look at what other people are writing, too. Check out Brand's contributions to Jason's Exit Interview for an excellent example of how to approach conversation and contribute usefully to a game that may not fully fit within your sphere of interest.

I'm really looking forward to your contributions!
